Digital signage is simple: they are just signs made of digital elements. Digital signage is everywhere these days. The government uses it; corporates use it. Stand-alone software was more popular in the earlier years of digital signage. Since it was much more unreliable to find stable internet access, stand-alone signage was more secure to program and use. We don’t need stand-alone digital signage anymore these days as an internet connection is available everywhere these days. Unless you need to install digital signage systems in a remote location or a rural area, there is no use for stand-alone software. Thus, its popularity has fallen away in recent years, and we have moved on to more efficient systems. 

Networked Digital Signage

Networked digital signage is the most common type of digital signage system available to us these days. It has three components: a back-end Content Management Server (CMS), a player software, and a digital screen.

Let us look at them in detail. 

Content Management Server

Digital signage software starts here. CMS is where you upload the visual content you will display. These can include images, graphics, videos, and the like.

Digital Signage Player

When you have uploaded your visual content to the CMS, it sends them across your network to your media player. These players will connect to your network or your individual computer. Vendors will often package these with your signage software. 

Digital Screen: 

The digital screen is what you see of the digital signage system. There are a whole variety of screens and many variables to consider. These factors include price, type of screen, durability, functionality, and quality. 

Networked digital signage also comes in two different types of software: on-premise and cloud. 

  • On-Premise Digital Signage

Here, you install the CMS software in the user’s hardware or computer at their preferred location. These locations can be their business location or on a remote, hosted server. You only need to purchase on-premise digital signage once; there is no recurrent monthly fee.

 The one-time fee covers operating costs, equipment maintenance, security, backups, etc. Large corporations usually prefer on-premise digital signage solutions since they have IT departments who can manage it. 

  • Cloud Digital Signage 

In cloud-based digital signage solutions, there is no serve. Here, you lease the CMS instead of buying it. It puts all the work of managing it, like its installation and security, on the service provider. 

Small and medium-sized businesses prefer this option since they don’t have the resources necessary to handle the server’s maintenance. There is also no investment upfront; the customers pay a monthly fee instead. 

How Does Digital Signage Work? 

Now we have covered all the different types. Let us look at how digital signage works. It has a lot to offer, and every year, the possibilities only grow bigger. 

Digital signage needs five separate components of digital signage. Let us look at them and understand how they contribute to the whole working picture. 

  • Content: The content is what you will display on the screen. It can be a message, an advertisement, and data feeds. 
  • Management: As we have looked at this earlier, the CMS organises, schedules, and delivers messages to media players or on playback devices. 
  • Playback: The media player pushes the content onto the display. It handles the rendering on the feeds and distributes it to the screens.  
  • Display: The display screen is usually a flatscreen. The screens are wall-mounted or fitted in a kiosk. These screens can also be interactive. The types of screens it includes are menu boards and way-finding tools. 
  • Infrastructure: These refer to the mounts, cabling, networks, the Internet connection, management equipment, and the like. They enable the messages to transfer from the content server to the display screens. 

Most companies only offer CMS and digital player. The screen and infrastructure, however, becomes your responsibility. You need to pick what is best suitable for your environment and your content. 

Furthermore, when companies provide digital signage solutions, they also offer content feeds, design services, training and consulting for your content, and engagement and marketing strategies. 

Another most essential part of digital signage that you will need to arrange is its network. The network should be strong enough to make the messages, organise and schedule those messages, and get those messages on the display screen. 

How Do You Make Content? 

Digital signage is nothing without the content you put on it. You can use it for any reason–everything from putting out messages, broadcasting live feeds, showing advertisements, and spreading information. The content you make depends on your business.
